Getting there, and help with costs
- Every prison page on GOV.UK has local directions, parking notes and public-transport pointers.
- If you receive certain benefits or hold an NHS tax-credit exemption certificate, you may get help through the Assisted Prison Visits Scheme.
- Claims usually cover travel, and sometimes overnight stay and meals.

What this actually means
Visit cost is usually travel plus time off work, not the visit itself. The Assisted Prison Visits Scheme exists because this is a known barrier.
Remote prisons are a different product from city locals. Check trains and taxis before you promise a Saturday.
If you qualify for help, claim it. It is not a favour.
Questions families ask
The HMP Forest Bank GOV.UK page has directions, parking notes, and public-transport pointers. Open parking near Forest Bank for the official note and the three closest car parks.
- Visiting times sit on that prison’s hours page, not the travel page. Open Forest Bank visiting times before you set off.
