Getting there, and help with costs
- Every prison page on GOV.UK has local directions, parking notes and public-transport pointers.
- If you receive certain benefits or hold an NHS tax-credit exemption certificate, you may get help through the Assisted Prison Visits Scheme.
- Claims usually cover travel, and sometimes overnight stay and meals.
What families reported
“There is a train station about 15 min walk from the prison. I used to travel 3 hours by bus and there is a bus that goes from Liverpool city centre too the hospital out back of the prison it’s about a 10 min walk from the bus stop. The prison can pay for your travel if u live over so many miles away just ask them at reception when you arrive”

What this actually means
Visit cost is usually travel plus time off work, not the visit itself. The Assisted Prison Visits Scheme exists because this is a known barrier.
Remote prisons are a different product from city locals. Check trains and taxis before you promise a Saturday.
If you qualify for help, claim it. It is not a favour.

- Visiting times sit on that prison’s hours page, not the travel page. Open Altcourse visiting times before you set off.
